What would you be if you could be anything? Where would you go if you could go anywhere? What would you do tomorrow if you understood that the world is wide and life is short?
Like a lot of people, I have more than one life. In my modern life, I'm a working artist and a freelance graphic designer and web admin, with an arts degree in design from PSU. I also have a bachelors degree in anthropology from the University of Oregon. I love to pursue various crafty activities and forms of artistic expression, and to travel and explore both the wider world and the glorious (if rainy) backyard of the Pacific Northwest. I am deeply interested in and concerned by the state of politics and the environment, and am finding ways to become more active and involved in the changes afoot in the world.
In my other life, I am a member of the Society of Creative Anachronism, a non-profit organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the Middle Ages. My interest ranges from early period cultures (up until the 6th century CE) across Europe and Asia to 10th century Scandinavia. My favorite projects include researching and making glass beads, various textile arts, and period cooking/food preservation. I have personas as both a 10th century Norsewoman living on the Isle of Man and as a 1st century Roman woman living in Pompeii.
In both lives, I am dedicated to marching to the beat of my own inner drummer/raven.
"Young Raven" is the English translation of my Scandinavian SCA name, which is Rafny. In some cultures, the raven is considered to be the totem animal of those born between September and October 23rd (Libra bird!). The raven is a trickster and a wise-ass, but also a prophet and a visionary: qualities I would not mind encouraging in myself.
